Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital was founded in 1904, and became the affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2002. It is a large-scale comprehensive teaching hospital of Class III and A. The hospital has 1,826 approved beds, 1956 actually opened beds, and 46 clinical medical technical departments. In 2017, the hospital had 3,998,800 outpatient and emergency visits, 105,200 discharged patients, and 116,800 various operations. The hospital has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 national 973 chief scientist, 4 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, 2 winners of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund Project, and selected by the Central Organization Department’s Young Top Talent Support Program 1 winner, 2 winners from the New Century Excellent Talents Training Program of the Ministry of Education, 4 winners from the Ministry of Personnel’s Ten Thousand Thousand Talents Project, 2 winners from the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Youth Fund Project, and 1 Young Changjiang Scholar.

In 1958, Professor Zhou Yongchang and others started the ultrasound medical career here, and the hospital is known as the "Birthplace of Ultrasound Diagnosis in China". In 1963, Professor Chen Zhongwei and Professor Qian Yunqing pioneered the first replantation of a severed limb in the history of international medicine. The hospital is known as the cradle of replantation of severed limbs in my country. In 1978, Professor Yu Zhongjia and others successfully studied the "reconstruction technology of missing hands or all fingers", and was hailed as "Chinese hands" worldwide and won the first prize of national invention. In 2003, Professor Xiang Kunsan was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering because of his outstanding contributions in the field of diabetes.
