 Shanghai First People's Hospital (Shanghai General Hospital) was founded on March 1, 1864. It is one of the earliest comprehensive century-old hospitals in the country. In 1877, it was renamed Gongji Hospital. In 1981, it was listed as Shanghai Red Cross Hospital. In 1992, it became the first batch of tertiary A general hospitals in the country. In 2002, it was crowned as the First People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 2006, it actively promoted the equalization of high-quality medical resources and took the lead in setting up a branch in Songjiang District, creating a new pattern of hospital development. The hospital has always maintained the title of Shanghai Civilized Unit, and has won many times the National Top 100 Hospital, National Advanced Unit of Health System, National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization, National Advanced Unit for Medical Ethics Construction, National Advanced Unit for Hospital Culture Construction, National May 1st Labor Medal And other honors.

The hospital is divided into two departments, Hongkou and Songjiang, covering an area of about 295,000 square meters. The hospital has always been adhering to the service concept of "everything is patient-centered", advocating the hospital mission of "Public and Humane, Helping the World", providing patients with high-quality medical services with strict medical style, superb medical technology and strict scientific management .

 There are 4206 employees in the hospital, including 570 with senior professional titles, 1411 with master's degree or above, 1820 approved beds, and 68 clinical tertiary disciplines and medical technology disciplines in the north and south. In 2019, the hospital admitted 4.299 million outpatient and emergency patients, a year-on-year increase of 5.57%; the number of discharges was 129,600, a year-on-year increase of 7.15%; the number of operations was 111,000, an increase of 18.62%; the average length of stay was 6.26 days, a year-on-year decrease of 0.24 days; the proportion of medicine consumption Control at 49.4%. Shenkang’s 54 key diseases were ranked in the first three quarters: 9 hospitals ranked the top three diseases, accounting for 16.7%; the top five diseases were 23, accounting for 42.59%, an increase of 4 from the same period last year.
