The First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University was established in 1949 on the original site of the Garrison District Hospital of Harbin City. After nearly 70 years of development, it has grown from a small hospital with 230 beds and 395 employees to a total construction area of more than 600,000 square meters, with a total of 6496 beds. It has a blood tumor hospital, a cardiovascular hospital, Gastroenterology hospitals, eye hospitals, dental hospitals, children's hospitals, mental health centers and other specialized hospitals, a large-scale comprehensive hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research. The hospital is the largest medical center in Heilongjiang Province with a complete set of medical specialties and strong technical force.

There are 51 clinical departments, 17 medical technical departments, 121 wards, 5733 employees and 1034 professionals with deputy senior titles or above. In 2017, the number of outpatient and emergency visits reached 2.887 million, 266,000 discharged patients, 124,000 surgical procedures, and an average hospital stay of 8.23 days. The hospital also undertakes the health care, diagnosis and treatment tasks for leaders above the vice-provincial level and important foreign guests.

In 1992, it was rated as a "third-level first-class" hospital; in 1998, it was awarded the title of national "top 100 hospitals". In 2010, it passed the third-level first-class hospital review with the highest score in the province. In 2014, it was awarded the title of "National Demonstration Hospital for People Reassured". In 2018, it was selected as one of 100 provincial and ministerial-level intractable diseases diagnosis and treatment capacity improvement projects. The hospital has formed a cooperative hospital with more than 120 hospitals both inside and outside the province, covering surrounding countries and regions. 17 specialties such as hematology and neurosurgery have been rated as national key clinical specialties construction projects. 24 specialties including cardiology and general surgery have become the medical quality control center of Heilongjiang Province. The hospital has clinical medicine and stomatology majors, with 23 teaching and research sections and 7 teaching and research groups, which undertake clinical teaching tasks for postgraduates, 5+3 academic systems, five-year programs, international students and adult education. It is a national (five-star) excellent demonstration clinical teaching base and a national standardized training demonstration base for residents. There are 77 doctoral tutors, 337 master tutors, more than 3,000 students in the college, and nearly 500 advanced doctors.

The hospital has strong scientific research capabilities. Six key laboratories above the provincial level, including the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education and the Key Laboratory of Cell Transplantation of the Ministry of Health, have been established in the hospital. It has 1 provincial and 7 school-level research institutes, 40 research rooms, and a post-doctoral research station for clinical medicine and oral clinical medicine.

The hospital took the lead in the international research on the application and mechanism of arsenic trioxide in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, and won the first prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education’s Science and Technology Progress Award; the arsenous acid injection invented by the hospital was rated as a national second-class new drug. In the "Scientific Development Report" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2000, it was called one of the top ten scientific and technological inventions in China in the 20th century; the Shuanghuanglian preparation developed by the hospital won the Provincial Government Outstanding Achievement Award. Over the past ten years, he has undertaken more than 1,000 national and provincial major scientific research projects, and won more than 100 national, ministerial and provincial scientific and technological achievements awards.
