Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (Sun Yat-sen University Tumor Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Institute) was established in March 1964 and is one of the four earliest cancer hospitals established in New China. The center is one of the country’s largest and most powerful oncology bases integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and prevention. It undertakes the important task of national cancer prevention and treatment, and plays a role in cancer prevention and treatment in the country, especially in southern China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Leading role, subject status and comprehensive strength rank the leading level in the country.
Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is a National Key Discipline (Oncology), State Key Laboratory (State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China), Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province, National New Drug (Anti-tumor Drug) Clinical Trial Research The Center, the China Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Cancer Center, and the Ministry of Cancer Medicine jointly build a collaborative innovation center, a doctoral degree authorization point, and a post-doctoral research station; it is the support of the Guangdong Cancer Center, the Guangdong Esophageal Cancer Institute, and the Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association unit. Organizes the English academic journal Cancer Communications ("Cancer"), and has been selected for many times in "One Hundred Chinese Outstanding Academic Journals" and "China's Most Internationally Influential Academic Journals"; it was included by SCI in 2014, and its 2018 impact factor was 3.684. The center attracts and gathers talents with excellent culture, and gathers a high-level medical teaching and research team. There are 3,245 employees (including post-doctoral and specially-appointed personnel), including 228 master tutors and 157 doctoral tutors; 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Names, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 10 talents supported by the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund.
There are 1488 hospital beds actually open, 35 business departments, 8 functional departments, and 2 research departments. In 2019, the number of outpatient and emergency treatments reached 1.18 million, and the annual number of hospitalizations reached 130,000. The volume of medical services ranked among the forefront of national cancer hospitals. The center is one of the cradles for cultivating high-level oncology talents in China. It has trained a large number of outstanding oncology professionals for the whole country, especially Guangdong Province. Since 1964, the Ministry of Health has commissioned a national oncology clinical medicine training course, which has trained 5000 for the country. Many oncology professionals, some of whom have grown into academic leaders and backbones across the country. The center began to explore the standardized training of residents in cancer hospitals in 1990. It is one of the few "veteran" standardized training bases for residents in Guangdong Province. Since it was approved as the first batch of national standardized training bases for residents in September 2014, it now has 10 national-level standardized training bases for residents and 1 collaborative professional base. The total number of enrollment has exceeded 400, and it is committed to cultivating high-quality and homogenous outstanding medical talents for the society.
